Whether you love her or you hate her, everyone seems to have an opinion on Kim Kardashian. And any celebrity that can spark a heated conversation is worthy of a magazine cover, right?
Well, some might not agree. Though Kim Kardashian is arguably one of the biggest stars in Hollywood right now, many don't think she is deserving of some of the major magazine covers she has landed over the past few years. Between her stints on the cover of Allure, Glamour, Harper's Bazaar and most recently, Vogue, it's no secret that Kim's face is literally everywhere.
And so is the backlash. So much so that Anna Wintour felt the need to release a statement once the Kimye cover hit the Internet. Wintour explained, "As for the cover, my opinion is that it is both charming and touching, and it was, I should add, entirely our idea to do it; you may have read that Kanye begged me to put his fiancee on Vogue's cover. He did nothing of the sort."
Stefano Tonchi, editor-in-chief of W magazine put Kim on the cover for his November 2010 issue. When asked why he chose Kim for W (a decidedly conceptual, high-fashion publication), he said:
We thought that Kim provided a vehicle to critically approach popular culture and how reality TV was transforming the business of making TV shows, altering the cultural landscape in America, and subsequently in the world at large. Our Editor-at-Large Lynn Hirschberg has been working on this subject for a long time, she was fascinated with the success of Kim ... It is still one of our most successful covers at the newsstand and it has been a gift that keeps giving on our website.
And when we prompted Vanessa Bellugeon, editor-in-chief of French fashion magazine L'Officiel, as to why Kim and Kanye appeared on the Spring 2013 cover of L'Officiel Hommes (a men's magazine adapted from L'Officiel), she explained:
Kim and Kanye are pop icons, in the sense that Andy Warhol meant it: they are part of our contemporary pop culture, embracing high-end fashion, music, mainstream popularity and cutting edge creativity. This approach is precisely at the core of L'Officiel de la Mode et de la Couture's DNA.
So, there you have it. Kim K. is the icon of our time.
Icon or not, she did look pretty damn hot in most of these images. Check out her most major magazine covers over the years and let us know if you think she was deserving.
